Celebrate 75 Years of Assumption Parish & School
Assumption Parish and School are excited to celebrate our 75th anniversary in 2026,
and we want you to be part of the fun!
75th Anniversary Calendar:
Celebrating 75 Years of Faith — All Year Long
Just a few weeks ago, we gathered to celebrate our 75th Anniversary Mass, remembering that on February 11, 1951, the very first Mass of Assumption Parish was held at the Bal Theatre on East 14th Street. There was no church building yet — only faith, determination, and a community willing to build something beautiful together.
That spirit is still alive.
Our 75th Anniversary is not just one event — it is a year-long celebration of who we are as a parish family, rooted in the Eucharist and guided by Mary, our patroness under the title of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
From the beginning, devotion to Mary has shaped our identity. Established just months after Pope Pius XII defined the dogma of the Assumption in 1950, our parish has always looked to Our Blessed Mother as a model of faith, trust, and hope. Her “yes” continues to inspire ours.
A Year of Celebration — In Joy and Gratitude
Under the leadership of Father John Carillo and with the incredible dedication of our 75th Anniversary Committee — led by co-chairs Jacqui Diaz and Mary Schirmer — we are celebrating all year long.
Here are just some of the events that will be celebrated throughout this special anniversary year:
St. Patrick’s Day Celebration – A joyful parish gathering to kick off the spring season together.
Feast of Our Lady of Fatima – Honoring the deep Portuguese roots of San Leandro and our Marian devotion.
San Leandro Cherry Parade – Celebrating our place in the wider community and sharing our parish pride.
August 15 – Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Our parish feast day and the heart of our Marian identity.
A Community-Wide Book Read – Bringing parishioners together in faith and reflection.
Our October Gala – A special evening of celebration, gratitude, and fellowship.
Celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe – Honoring the cultural richness & faith traditions of our parish family.
Simbang Gabi during Advent – Preparing our hearts for Christmas in prayer and unity.
Each celebration reflects who we are — diverse, joyful, rooted in tradition, and united in faith.
A Parish Built by Generations
Since that first Mass in 1951, Assumption has celebrated:
4,386 Baptisms - 8,890 First Holy Communions - 4,076 Confirmations - 1,481 Weddings
Our parish and school have grown together for 75 years, now celebrating our 75th graduating class. We are blessed with more than 44 active ministries serving both parish and community — including our worship and liturgical ministries, faith formation and evangelization programs, outreach and service efforts such as St. Vincent de Paul, the Brown Bag Project, Lasagna Love, Knitting and Crochet, Assumption University for Seniors, and our newest Pastoral Care Ministry. Through our devotional and prayer groups, parish organizations, boards, and councils, we continue to strengthen both our spiritual life and our commitment to serving the wider San Leandro community.
Through it all, Assumption has remained what it has always been: centered on the Eucharist and strengthened by its people.
With Deep Gratitude
This anniversary year would not be possible without the many hands and hearts working behind the scenes. Thank you to our 75th Anniversary Committee for the countless hours of planning, organizing, and dreaming. Thank you to our volunteers, ministry leaders, parish staff, and every parishioner who continues to say “yes” to serving.
Seventy-five years ago, parishioners raised the funds to build this church themselves. Today, we continue building — not just with bricks, but with faith, service, and community.
As we celebrate throughout this year, may Mary, our patroness, continue to guide and protect Assumption Parish and School.
The celebration has begun — and we rejoice together. Happy 75th Anniversary, Assumption Parish. 💙

Assumption 75th Anniversary Celebration Has Begun
We are excited to announce that the Year of our 75th Anniversary has officially begun! Jacqui Diaz and Mary Schirmer are serving as co-chairs of this year’s celebration, along with a dedicated 75th Anniversary Committee who have planned many activities and events for us to enjoy throughout the year.
2026 marks 75 years of Assumption Parish and School serving the San Leandro community—a milestone worth celebrating!
This week we are launching the year with some exciting news!
Please Save the Date: Wednesday, February 11th, for the Anniversary of the First Mass of Assumption Parish. The Mass begins at 6 p.m., followed by a reception in the gym. Think of it as a big Assumption family reunion—a time to catch up with old friends, share treasured memories, laugh together, and reconnect with the community that has shaped our lives. Former priests, school principals, and staff have been invited, and we encourage you to reach out to past parishioners, school families, alumni, and friends so no one misses this special evening of joy, nostalgia, and celebration!
Leading up to the Anniversary Mass, we will hold a Novena for Finding Hope and Healing, from February 2 – February 10. In 75 years, our community has experienced joy, sadness, changes, and challenges—but also hope. This novena is an opportunity to pray, heal, and start fresh together, creating peace and strengthening the bonds of our community.
We can’t celebrate this milestone without your support. We need prayers, volunteers, participation, and financial help.
This coming week, you will receive a 75th Anniversary packet in the mail, which includes a calendar of events, including a community book read, special Masses and receptions, and a Gala in October. All parish ministries are involved, and our goal is to energize parish and school families while welcoming the broader community to rediscover and engage with Assumption.
The packet will also include a Legacy Giving form. We ask you to consider sponsoring this year’s activities. To volunteer or for questions, please contact the 75th Anniversary team at [email protected] If you are not yet receiving parish mailings, please contact the Rectory to stay updated.
Let’s celebrate 75 years together and dream of what the next 75 years can bring!
Thank you

February 2026 Brown Bag Project Lasagna Love:
Sharing Kindness, One Tray at a Time In coordination with our 75th Anniversary celebration season, Assumption Church and School are joining hands to spread kindness through Lasagna Love — a simple but powerful way to care for local families who could use a little extra warmth. In November 2025, our first Lasagna Love gathering brought volunteers together in the Parish Center to cook, assemble, and connect. Thanks to generous donations and joyful hands at work, we’re already one-third of the way toward our goal of 75 lasagnas in honor of 75 years of faith, service, and compassion. As we continue our 75th celebration, Lasagna Love will also be the focus of our February and April Brown Bag projects — more opportunities to join hearts, hands, and ovens to make meals filled with love. We welcome your help! Volunteers to cook, assemble, and deliver meals.
Brown Bag Donations Help us make meals filled with love for local families in need! We are collecting: Pasta, sauce, pans, and foil. Visa or Costco gift cards to purchase cheese and ground beef. Items can be left in the history rectory and the rectory. Every tray reminds someone they are seen, supported, and loved. Each lasagna carries more than nourishment — it carries gratitude, connection, and the spirit of Assumption’s mission in action. The date for preparing the next batch of lasagnas will be announced soon — help us reach our goal of 75 trays!

Mamma Mia! The First Taste of 75 is Officially Here!
What a night! Our Mamma Mia! Parish Pasta Dinner that was held October 4, 2025 wasn’t just about delicious food and fun — it was the first fundraiser kicking off the yearlong celebration of Assumption Church and School’s 75th Anniversary in 2026!
A huge thank you to our amazing co-chairs Mary and Jacqui for leading the charge toward this milestone year.
Special thanks to Don and his team for a truly delicious dinner, and to Trevor and Loren for keeping the drinks and smiles flowing behind the bar.
We’re also deeply grateful to all the volunteers who set up, served, and made the evening shine.
It was wonderful to see so many parishioners — past and present — families, and friends gathered together once again. What a reunion! The excitement for next year’s 75th celebration is already building.
Assumption has always been more than a parish and school — it’s a family rooted in faith, united in fellowship, and blessed with a spirit of giving. Every meal, every moment, and every act of generosity brings us closer to celebrating 75 years of love, learning, and faith.
Lasagna Love: Sharing Kindness, One Tray at a Time
In November 2025, as part of our 75th Anniversary celebration season, Assumption Church and School came together to launch Lasagna Love — a simple but powerful way to spread kindness through homemade meals. Our goal? To prepare 75 lasagnas in honor of 75 years of faith, service, and compassion, each one delivered to a local family who could use a little extra warmth and care.
Our first gathering on November 16, 2025, in the Parish Center brought volunteers together to cook, assemble, and connect. Thanks to generous donations and joyful hands at work, we are now one-third of the way toward our goal — a meaningful milestone made possible by this incredible community.
As we continue our 75th celebration, Lasagna Love will also be the focus of our February and April Brown Bag projects. These months offer more opportunities for our parish and school families to join hands, hearts, and ovens to make meals filled with love for local families in need.
We welcome:
- Volunteers to help cook, assemble, and deliver meals
- Donations of pasta, sauce, pans, and foil
- Visa or Costco gift cards, which allow us to purchase cheese, ground beef, and fresh herbs
A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who has already contributed. Your generosity helps us move closer to filling all 75 lasagnas and creating a legacy of kindness that reflects our 75 years of community and faith.
To help, contact Mary Schirmer at [email protected], or drop off supplies at the back of the church or at the church office during the week.
Together, we are making kindness something you can taste — and a tradition that will nourish hearts for years to come.
